UK Overtime Rules & National Minimum Wage Compliance
In the UK, there is no legal requirement for employers to pay a higher rate for overtime (such as "time and a half"). However, your contract of employment will specify what you are entitled to. Many UK businesses offer enhanced rates to encourage additional hours.
The 48-Hour Weekly Limit
Under the Working Time Regulations, you cannot be forced to work more than an average of 48 hours a week. If you choose to work more, you must sign a written "opt-out" agreement. Our calculator helps you track your total hours to ensure you stay within legal limits or have the correct agreements in place.
National Minimum Wage (NMW) Warning
A critical point of UK compliance is that even if you work unpaid overtime, your average hourly pay for the pay period must not fall below the National Minimum Wage. For 2026, this is £12.71 per hour for most adults. Use our "NMW Check" feature above to ensure your employer is meeting their legal obligations.
